  2. or Little Cuckoo (Cuculus poliocephalus),a bird 
  3. often mentioned in Japanese poetry. The cry is 
  4. very different from that of the ordinary cuckoo. 
  5. The bird was sometimes considered a messenger 
  6. from the other-world, and a harbinger of death.
